The rule: one booking, final destination
The Court of Justice ruled in Folkerts (C-11/11) that for connecting flights on one booking, the delay at the final destination counts. It doesn't matter whether the first flight was delayed by 20 minutes or 2 hours.
Which journeys are covered?
The journey must start in the EU, EEA, Switzerland or UK, or be operated by an EU or UK airline when it arrives there. Connections via non-EU hubs, for example Amsterdam to Bangkok via Dubai on one booking, can be covered too.
How is the amount calculated?
On the straight-line distance between your first departure airport and your final destination, not the total distance flown.
Common questions
I booked my flights separately. Can I claim?
Only for a delay of the individual flight. The airline of your second flight isn't responsible for you missing it.
Which airline do I claim from?
From the airline that operated the delayed flight that caused you to miss your connection.
