When do you have a claim?
When you had a confirmed booking, checked in on time and were at the gate on time, and the airline refused to let you board for reasons other than your documents, health, safety or behaviour.
Volunteers are different
Before refusing passengers, airlines must ask for volunteers. If you volunteered and agreed benefits in return, such as vouchers or money, you can't claim compensation on top.
What else you're entitled to
Besides compensation, you can choose a refund or a new flight, and the airline must provide meals, communication and a hotel if needed.
Common questions
I was downgraded to a lower class. Is that denied boarding?
Downgrading gives a right to a partial refund of 30–75% of the ticket price depending on distance, not to compensation.
The airline said my seat was given away because I was late at the gate.
If you arrived at the gate before the time on your boarding pass, the airline can't use that as a reason. Tell us what happened.
