Check compensationYour rights with Ethiopian Airlines
Ethiopian Airlines must follow EU261 like every other airline. If your flight arrived 3 or more hours late, was cancelled less than 14 days before departure, or you were denied boarding, you can claim compensation based on the flight distance:
| Flight distance | Compensation |
|---|---|
Up to 1,500 km e.g. Amsterdam – London | €250 |
1,500 – 3,500 km, or any flight within the EU over 1,500 km e.g. Berlin – Lisbon | €400 |
Over 3,500 km e.g. Paris – New York | €600 |
For delays, the arrival delay at your final destination must be 3 hours or more. Long-haul delays of 3–4 hours pay 50%.
Ethiopian Airlines flights departing from the EU, EEA, Switzerland or UK are covered. Flights arriving in Europe from elsewhere are not covered, because Ethiopian Airlines is based outside the EU and UK.
How to claim from Ethiopian Airlines
You can claim yourself through ethiopianairlines.com, or let us do it. We send the claim, deal with refusals and take Ethiopian Airlines to court if needed, for one fee of 20% incl. VAT.
Ethiopian Airlines compensation: common questions
How much compensation does Ethiopian Airlines pay?
Ethiopian Airlines pays €250, €400 or €600 per passenger depending on flight distance, as set by EU261. For flights under UK261, £220, £350 or £520.
How long does Ethiopian Airlines take to pay?
Most airlines pay within 2 to 12 weeks of receiving a complete claim. If Ethiopian Airlines refuses without a valid reason, we can take legal action, which takes longer but costs you nothing extra.
Can Ethiopian Airlines refuse because of bad weather or a technical problem?
Severe weather can exempt Ethiopian Airlines, but technical problems generally can't. Airlines sometimes give a reason that doesn't hold up; we check weather and air traffic data for your flight.
